Qualitative Melissopalynology Analysis, Glucose Oxydase Activity, and Antibacterial Effect of Honey Samples from Different Botanical Origin

چکیده مقاله:
Background and Aim: This research aims to study the qualitative melissopalynology analysis, Glucose oxydase (GOX) activity, and the antibacterial effect of honey samples from different botanical and geographical origins. Materials and Methods: Five natural honey samples were collected from local beekeepers. The antibacterial effect was carried out towards pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial activity of honey samples was evaluated using six dilutions (80%, 40%, 20%, 10%, 5%, and 2.5%). The bacterial susceptibility to honey was evaluated by the agar well diffusion and broth dilution assays. GOX activity was determined using hydrogen peroxide as a standard with peroxydase and o-dianisidine. Results: The results showed that two honey samples could be classified as monofloral (H1: Hedysarum coronarium, H4: Ziziphus sp), whereas honey samples H2, H3, and H5 are multifloral honey. All honey exhibit a good bactericidal effect against pathogenic bacteria. Statistical analysis showed that there was a correlation between GOX level and the antibacterial of honey samples. Conclusion: It can be concluded that honey is an important natural product, which has an antibacterial effect towards pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, honey should be used as an alternative therapy for the treatment of wound infected by multidrug resistant bacteria. Further research should be conducted to evaluate the mechanism and the bioactive compounds in honey.

Botanical origin of the nectar predominantly affects the chemical composition of honey. Analytical techniques used for reliable honey authentication are mostly time consuming and expensive. Additionally, they cannot provide 100% efficiency in accurate authentication. Therefore, alternatives for the determination of floral origin of honey need to be developed. This study aims to discriminate cha...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Antioxidant Activity of Three Varieties of Honey from Different Botanical and Geographical Origins
It is well established that honey contains substantial antioxidant compounds that could protect cell components from the harmful action of free radicals. One can speculate that these compounds may strengthen the organism defenses and consequently prevent oxidative stress in humans. Therefore, over time, impaired cells can accumulate and lead to age-related diseases. A comparative study was carr...

متن کاملFrom Flower to Honey Bouquet: Possible Markers for the Botanical Origin of Robinia Honey
Flowers are complex structures devoted to pollinator attraction, through visual as well as chemical signals. As bees collect nectar on flowers to produce honey, some aspects of floral chemistry are transferred to honey, making chemical markers an important technique to identify the botanical and geographical origins of honey. We applied a new approach that considers the simultaneous analysis of...
